PDF How-To

How to Merge PDFs for a Job Application

Combine your resume, cover letter, and portfolio into one clean PDF packet employers can open easily.

Why one PDF beats five attachments

Hiring portals often allow only one upload slot. Even when they allow multiple files, recruiters open whatever lands first โ€” and a scattered set of attachments makes a candidate look disorganized. Merging your resume, cover letter, and supporting pages into a single PDF keeps the story in order and reduces the chance something important gets skipped.

Recommended page order

  1. Cover letter (if required)
  2. Resume
  3. Portfolio samples, certifications, or reference list

Put the document people will read first at the front. If the job posting asks for a writing sample or certification, place it after the resume unless instructions say otherwise.

Step-by-step merge workflow

  1. Export or save each piece as PDF (Word can export to PDF; scans can use JPG to PDF).
  2. Open our Merge PDF tool and upload files in order.
  3. Drag cards to confirm sequence, then process and download.
  4. If the file is large, run Compress PDF before upload.

Final checks before you submit

Skim every page at 100% zoom. Confirm headers are not cut off and page two of your resume is not accidentally page one of an old draft. Name the file clearly, such as FirstName-LastName-Application.pdf. A clean packet shows attention to detail before anyone reads a single bullet point.
